A balcony morning before you head out

A book, a drink and a little attention to your surroundings can give the day a different beginning.

A room with twin beds and an opening onto a balcony

Prepare very little

When your accommodation has usable outdoor space, give it part of a morning before starting your visits. Choose a day without an immediate departure. Take outside only what you will use: a book, an extra layer and a drink if the property's arrangements allow it.

Leave the room organised enough that you do not have to keep returning to find things. There is no need to set a perfect table or recreate a holiday photograph. A comfortable seat and uninterrupted time may be enough. In a shared area, avoid occupying seating that other guests may need.

Observe without turning everything into a task

Look at one element at a time: the colour of the sky, shade on a wall, moving trees or a distant passageway. You can open the book or leave it closed. The point is not to collect a list of details but to let the landscape become more than a background to the next activity.

Listen to the sounds around you without demanding that all of them are pleasant or natural. An inhabited place has its own daily life. Keep conversations and devices considerate, avoid photographing neighbouring guests and leave furniture within its permitted area. The pause can remain simple and unobtrusive.

Move into the rest of the day gradually

Decide only what comes first afterwards: getting dressed, eating breakfast or reaching somewhere nearby. You do not need to fill all the subsequent hours immediately. When travelling together, agree on a time to head out while allowing each person some room for their own morning rhythm.

If the weather changes or sitting outside becomes unpleasant, continue in a suitable indoor space. The balcony was an opportunity rather than a condition to fulfil. Before leaving, collect your belongings and return what you used. The morning can continue without having to prove, through a photograph, that it was exceptional.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Save a moment without an immediate departure, bring a few things and notice the setting. Let the first activity follow the pause.
