Booking a room with a balcony you will actually use
Space, seating, exposure and privacy make a balcony useful beyond its appearance on a facilities list.

Ask what kind of space is included
A balcony may mean somewhere to sit or a small external opening with no room for a table. Examine photographs of the exact room category and ask about approximate dimensions, furniture and access. A shared terrace offers a different experience from a private balcony, even when shown beside room photographs. If your plan is breakfast or reading outside, establish whether that use is practical and permitted. Do not pay extra solely because a balcony sounds like an automatic upgrade; it should fit the way you expect to spend time at the property during this particular trip.
Look beyond the view straight ahead
Ask what lies beneath and beside the balcony: a road, restaurant, neighbouring terraces or garden will affect noise and privacy. Its orientation may make it pleasant at one time of day and uncomfortable at another. Photographs taken in flattering light do not describe the entire stay. During a cool or rainy period, consider how often you will use it and whether the room remains comfortable without going outside. Check rules about smoking, food and drying belongings rather than inferring permitted uses from other guests’ photographs. A little context can explain more than a wide-angle image of the horizon.
Compare it with other room features
Within a fixed budget, a balcony may mean a smaller room or less convenient location. Compare indoor space, bed, bathroom and access to facilities before deciding. If you will be out all day, a pleasant shared area may suffice; if private pauses matter, outdoor space can offer more value. On arrival, check that the room matches the booked category and promptly raise meaningful differences. A well-chosen balcony does not need a spectacular panorama: usable seating at the hour when you want a break may be its most valuable feature. Buy the arrangement you expect to use, rather than the imagined photograph.
Book a balcony for a specific purpose and confirm space, seating and privacy; the view alone does not explain how comfortable your pause will be.
