Leave on Friday evening or Saturday morning?

Comparing genuinely usable hours is more helpful than simply counting the nights added to a weekend.

Calculate the journey from your door to bed

A Friday evening departure seems to lengthen a trip automatically. To assess it, include the whole sequence: finishing work, collecting luggage, reaching the station, any changes and the final transfer. The train's arrival time is not the moment when you can finally put your suitcase down in your room.

Check how the journey fits with check-in and a straightforward meal. If you need late arrival arrangements, request instructions before buying the connection. Do not assume reception is permanently staffed or that the property can accommodate any delay without specific arrangements agreed beforehand.

Compare two realistic Saturday mornings

Imagine how you would use Saturday under each option. Arriving on Friday lets you wake up at the destination, but a short night may leave you with less energy. Leaving on Saturday allows sleep at home and travel in daylight, while reducing destination time. Neither option is universally more relaxing.

Write a small programme for each using services verified for your dates. Compare the first free moment, the full accommodation cost and the transfers involved. An additional night is valuable when it gives you something you actually want, rather than merely increasing the duration shown on the reservation.

Reduce effort before departure

For Friday, pack the day before and keep commitments immediately after arrival minimal. For Saturday, avoid loading the afternoon with bookings to compensate for hours spent travelling. In either case, preserve some margin before the experience you care about most, rather than making it dependent on everything running perfectly.

Consider Sunday alongside the outward journey. A comfortable arrival loses some of its benefit if the return forces an unwelcome early start. Choose the combination that distributes rest and free time best across the whole weekend, reflecting the real habits of everyone who is travelling with you.
