Choose accommodation with a garden you can actually enjoy

Seating, access and rules turn photographed greenery into a usable part of the stay.

Ask how the garden is used

A garden may be decorative, shared or attached to a particular room. Ask which areas guests can enter and at what hours. If you imagine reading outside, check seating and shade; if you want to eat, establish where this is permitted. A photograph of set tables may show an event or restaurant rather than freely available space. When a garden is private or reserved, check information for the category you are booking. Do not assume every room has the direct access shown in one suite’s photograph. Knowing the actual arrangement helps you judge whether the outdoor space supports your plans.

Consider its relationship with the room

A garden-level room makes going outside easy but may sit near paths, tables or maintenance activity. A more distant room provides a different experience within the same property. Consider privacy, the route and whether you can leave belongings in your room during a pause. For specific mobility needs, ask about surfaces and level changes rather than inferring suitability from a lawn. Look at rainy-day alternatives too: an appealing garden adds value but cannot replace the indoor spaces you use when weather makes sitting outside impractical. Compare both parts of the property before letting the greenery determine your choice.

Make room for others and the setting

In shared areas, avoid covering several seats with bags or clothing, and do not reserve a place with belongings during long absences. Follow rules about food, smoking and quiet rather than assuming outdoor spaces have fewer restrictions. Keep conversation considerate of nearby rooms. Before booking, think about how many garden pauses you will actually take: with a full programme of outings, convenient location may matter more. If you want to remain at the property, a small well-organised outdoor area may be more useful than extensive grounds without seating or clear access. Choose usable time outdoors rather than the largest patch of green in the photographs.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Confirm permitted uses, seating and the connection to your room: a garden’s value lies mainly in the pauses you can actually spend there.
