A slower outdoors

Sketch a landscape without needing drawing skills

A small notebook and a few marks can help you observe a scene without producing an image for anyone else.

Hands drawing in a notebook

Choose one manageable detail

A broad panorama makes including everything tempting. For a first sketching pause, choose one relationship instead: a mountain line above a roof, a tree beside water or a bend in the path. Settle somewhere you are allowed to remain without obstructing others. You need few materials; a notebook and pencil make starting and leaving straightforward. If using colours, protect the area and take every residue away. Drawing is a way of looking, so choosing a suitable place matters more than paper quality or carrying a complete collection of equipment. Make the activity easy enough to fit naturally into your day.

Separate shapes from details

Begin with a few large lines and notice where they meet. Look at the landscape more often than the page and allow proportions to remain approximate. Add a word for a colour or an arrow showing the light’s direction without filling every space. If something does not work, try a second small sketch rather than continually correcting the first. Avoid moving onto awkward ground to obtain an easier composition. Respect the privacy of nearby people and do not turn the pause into an unsolicited portrait session. Concentrating on landscape shapes keeps the activity simple and discreet while leaving room for your own interpretation.

Keep the context of the moment

Write the date, place and one sentence about what you noticed. These details can make even a very basic drawing interesting. You do not have to publish it or compare it with professional images. When travelling with others, agree on a pause that fits the shared plan and put the notebook away at the agreed time. Wind or rain may suggest continuing from your accommodation’s window rather than finishing everything outdoors. Check that you have your pencil and other belongings before leaving. An incomplete page can be a worthwhile memory precisely because it records a real pause, shaped by the time and conditions available to you.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Draw one relationship between shapes, add a note and stop when needed: the purpose is observation rather than a demonstration of artistic ability.
