Arrive early and make the wait comfortable

Allow time to find your way, sit down and prepare for the next journey.

An empty bench beside railway tracks and mountains

Distinguish a buffer from empty hours

Arriving early does not mean spending half a day at the station. The buffer covers concrete steps: reaching the correct entrance, finding your way, checking the train and moving luggage. A familiar station and an unfamiliar one need different preparation, as do journeys with or without prearranged assistance.

Work backwards from departure. Add travel from your accommodation, collection of any stored bags and room for ordinary delays. Do not apply the same margin to a small stop and a complex railway interchange simply because both are called stations.

Find your way before settling down

Once you arrive, check your journey information and identify the route towards the platforms. Only then choose somewhere to wait. A bench away from displays may be pleasant, but you need to know how to receive updates. Notice stairs or passages that require extra time as well.

Arrange luggage without unnecessarily occupying seats or obstructing movement. Keep identification and tickets accessible while leaving other pockets closed. Waiting becomes easier when you do not repeatedly rearrange your bag to find something used only a few minutes earlier.

Choose a pause you can interrupt

A short chapter or a page of notes is easy to pause when the platform appears. Avoid something that takes all your attention if you need to follow announcements. When buying a drink or food, consider the queue and the time needed to return to your starting point.

Before moving, check your seat, sockets and floor space. Objects left charging or placed beside the bag are easy to forget when the waiting period ends.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Use the extra time to get oriented and settled; keep the break easy to interrupt.
