Bring a book, and make room to open it

A reading break can belong to the journey without needing to finish the book.

Choose for the journey you will have

A large volume may be enjoyable in your room and awkward across three train changes. Consider its weight, format and the moments when you expect to read. Short chapters suit waiting periods; a more demanding story may fit a free morning with no planned interruptions.

Do not choose only according to what you feel you ought to read. Bring something that makes you want to open the first page even when tired. If you use an electronic reader, check that the text is already on the device and include its charger among your essentials.

Find a place without taking over

A garden, bench or shared lounge can offer an enjoyable pause. First check whether the space is shared, whether rules apply and whether seating is intended for customers or guests. Choose somewhere you can remain without blocking a passage or occupying a seat that others need.

Outdoors, light, wind and noise affect the experience. Try a few pages before settling fully and protect the book from water and damp ground. There is no need to find a perfect location: a reasonably comfortable spot near somewhere you are already visiting is often enough.

Measure the pause, not the pages

Put your phone aside for an interval you can comfortably spare and preserve a margin before the next departure. If you would rather watch the landscape after a few pages, that is fine. The book accompanies the stay; it is not another target to complete before going home.

A bookmark saves your place when you need to move quickly. Keep the book in the same bag pocket, away from damp swimwear and containers that might open.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Choose an inviting book and an achievable pause, without setting yourself a page target.
