Choose footwear by looking at the route

Surfaces, slopes and stops matter more than the label “weekend break”.

Hiking boots and a map during a walking break

Picture a complete day

A short trip can include stations, cobbles, gravel paths and a stretch of trail. Before deciding which shoes to bring, reconstruct the most demanding day you expect. Look for information about surfaces and gradients, not only distance. A short walk on uneven ground differs from a long walk on a regular pavement.

If the plan includes a genuine hiking route, assess the equipment that route requires. Shoes chosen for visiting a village do not automatically become suitable for mountains. When you lack enough information, look for a simpler alternative rather than trying to fit the trail to a pair you have already chosen.

Try them with the right socks

Wear the shoes before departure with the socks you intend to bring. Take an ordinary walk and notice whether the fastening, space and grip suit your preferences. Stepping off a train with luggage is not the ideal moment to discover how a newly purchased pair behaves.

Check their general condition, the cleanliness of the soles and any fastening systems. Bring what you need to maintain them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. There is no need for many accessories: suitable footwear and a plan that allows breaks matter more.

After a walk

Before putting the shoes back in your suitcase, check for dirt or moisture and keep them separate from clean clothes. Dry them in a way suitable for the material. If the weather changes, adjust the plan too: reasonable equipment does not remove the need to assess conditions on the ground.

For a break, choose somewhere you can arrange your bag and footwear without blocking the route. Secure laces and accessories before leaving, and check for small belongings on the ground.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Start with the expected terrain and footwear you have already tried, then build the rest of your packing around it.
