Dress in layers without packing everything

A considered combination for moving from train to walk to evening.

Rolled clothes being packed in a suitcase

Think of three different moments

Treat travel, outdoor activity and evening as three conditions to cover rather than three wardrobes. Look for garments that can move between them by changing a single layer. A comfortable top, an additional layer and outer protection appropriate to the forecast can work together in several combinations.

Check the destination forecast close to departure and consider when you will be outside. The day’s maximum temperature says little about an early morning or a shaded stop. Indoor spaces can also differ: choose a combination that is easy to adjust without changing your entire outfit.

Try combinations on the bed

Lay out the garments and check that each layer fits comfortably over the previous one. An overly fitted jacket can make an extra top impractical. Limit colours if that helps combinations, but do not leave behind something you enjoy wearing just to create a neat-looking packing photograph.

Separate what you will wear in transit from what stays inside the luggage. Keep the layer you are likely to add on the train or at arrival easy to reach. Searching at the bottom of a full suitcase is awkward, especially when there is little room to open it.

Leave room for the return

Clothes do not always go back into a suitcase as neatly as they came out. Allow a bag for worn items and keep a little empty space. Before closing everything, remove an alternative that performs exactly the same job as another garment. Versatility comes from combinations rather than the number of options.

Remember layers you have already taken off: a scarf or sweatshirt left on a seat can disappear from your mental inventory. Check your seat and overhead space whenever changing transport.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Choose garments that work together and keep the layer you will use first within reach.
